West Park data centre

25 June 2008

During the next week we will be migrating a lot of our servers over from our current Burchett Place data centre to our new West Park data centre.

This will involve some downtime over the next few days and the weekend. In the case of our important services this should only be a few days though Aztec, Nazca and Maya may be down for a few days.

Our forward facing web and email servers are not located at either facility and so will be unaffected.

Aztec is back online

13 April 2008

Aztec is back online and fully functional once again.

Just another reminder if you didn't see the initial post about this maintenance window, there will be a second one next Sunday which could be up to an hour as we run some software updates on Olmec as well as bringing Nazca back online and restoring UPS power to Aztec.

Quick update on maintenance

13 April 2008

Olmec was brought back online just before 18:00 GMT as expected.

Aztec is suffering some technical issues and so has not yet been brought back online. We hope to have it back online within the next 30 minutes and will post an update then.

Scheduled server downtime this Sunday

10 April 2008

This is an early notice that there will be some scheduled downtime for Olmec, Nazca and Aztec this Sunday morning. We need to alter the power network and so will have to disconnect some of the servers in order to do this.

We'll post an update shortly before we take it offline. The outage window should only be about 15 minutes, possibly even faster if there are no issues but then there often are in these situations.

Futher more there will be another outage approximately a week later in order to carry out further maintenance to the power network. We will also be using this window to carry out some software upgrades and so expect the window to last an hour.

Finally, in the time between the two maintenance windows we will be running on limited uninterruptible power systems and so while we don't expect to have any outages, if the local power does fail the servers will be taken offline quickly.

Olmec is now back online, all services should be once again up and running. As far as we can tell there was no damaged resulting from the outage.

We're troubleshooting Olmec

First of all, we're aware Olmec is offline. We don't yet however know why. It lost network connectivity and when we restarted it, it output a series of beeps and refused to boot up. We're taking it out of the rack for a proper look now.

Big downtime, big changes

18 December 2007

You may have noticed a lot of our sites have been online over the weekend. This is because of some security issues we ran into that were serious enough for us to pull the main web server until they had been resolved.

The aftermath of which is that we still have a lot of work to do in checking over our network to ensure everything is secure. This also leads onto the a wider problem which means we are going to have to make some changes.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who are just simply bad people. This people thrive on other people's misery, hacking, destroying and spamming. They are the scum of the earth up, up there with pedophiles and people who talk at the theatre.

The Worfolk Online network as always had a philosophy of keeping our legacy sites online so people have access to as much content as possible and because the internet currently suffers from big problems in terms of content only being available for short periods. How many pages have existed for more than 18 months? Not many. This results in many dead links as pages appear and disappear while annoys and flustrates all of us.

Unfortunately we simply can't keep a network the size of ours secure and safe from from all the scum out there. So we're going to begin culling our network quite dramatically. Our important sites will be kept online of course and we hope to keep most of them online. But a lot will disappear. So enjoy them while you can.

November overhaul

21 November 2007

We're about to undertake quite a bit of work at our Burchett Place datacenter which will affect quite a few of the servers. Full details are below.

Firstly we are upgrading the backup power supply systems of Zapotec, Aztec, Olmec and Nazca which will take them all offline for a brief period of time. Secondly we are installing new management systems on Inca and Zapotec which will then take them offline.

Finally we are installing some new hardware in Inca which will take it offline for a little longer period of time. We will also be installing some software updates while we are having some downtime to make sure that everything is up to date.

This maintenance will begin at approximately 14:30 GMT today.

Aztec downtime

6 November 2007

Due to some hardware problems with a different server we are having to take Aztec offline for the indefinite future (on the same day we finally got it online and everything).

It might not take that long but I would imagine that it will be down for a good couple of hours and could well be down for a few days.

Nazca may go offline for short periods of time again while we are moving things around although if all goes well we will be able to keep it online.

New servers update

6 November 2007

A heads up on a few services. First of all, Aztec will be up and running on a regular basis within the hour. We're just sorting the final few things out now.

Secondly, Nazca will be offline for the next 15 minutes while we move a few things round.
